Shaykh Saalih Aal-Shaykh;

What is the matter that I see your scholars are departing and your ignorant ones aren’t learning? Learn! For indeed the scholar and the learner are sharers in reward.

From the words of Abu Dardaa (radi allahu anhu) and advice to his followers rather to the whole Ummah that he once said to the people; What is the matter that I see your scholars are departing and your ignorant ones aren’t learning? Learn! For indeed the scholar and the learner are sharers in reward. “What is the matter that I see your scholars are departing and your ignorant ones aren’t learning?”

How often did we cry from the departure of numerous scholars? From those whom we have come across but didn’t take from them (knowledge). Or from those whom we heard of them and we wished if we met them. The people are abstaining from the scholars because they are amongst them, because they are alive. When they depart the hearts shake for them.

“What is the matter that I see your scholars are departing and your ignorant ones aren’t learning?” With us at the moment we have scholars they are the safwah (elite) of the ummah, fuqahaa (jurist) of the ummah and scholars of the Ummah with regards to Tawheed (monotheism), hadeeth, fiqh and the science of the shariah. We see them departing and we see small number of people with them. Why? Why are the youth many (in number) and the committed ones are many and most of them have free time and they are not approaching the scholars and learning. Why?

The ummah today are in dire need of scholars to teach and nurture them. Abu Dardaa said: “What is the matter that I see your scholars are departing and your ignorant ones aren’t learning?”  there is no doubt at the time of the companions the scholars were plenty, and at the time of the tabieen…. the people are increasing (in number) but if the numbers of the scholars are few they can’t satisfy the need of the people.

Today what is the number of the Ulamaa? We say 10,20,30,50 but after 10 years what will be the population of the ummah? Here in this country, what is the population? They might reach 30 to 40 million for example. Who is going to teach them? Will a single person be able to? Will 10% of the population be able to? How is the condition of the ummah right, left, north and south? How is their condition? There is no doubt they are in need of you, in need of someone to take the knowledge from its people (scholars) thus teach them.

 This is why I advice myself and yourself  that this advice remains in your hearts. Learn and take from the scholars today. For verily it will come to you a time you will see after 10, 20 or 30 years the people will search for a scholar and might not find one. One who is a verifier in knowledge, speech and action. One who is a faqeeh in that which he says.

Look left and right in other countries, you will see many speaking regarding ilm but their speech is not restricted to…… rather it’s the minority that their speech is restricted to the kitaab and the Sunnah. Why? Because the scholars departed and the ignorant ones didn’t learn, and the people didn’t learn and the people are increasing in number.

So take the advice of Abu Dardaa for indeed he was wise, sincere advisor, pious and compassionate when he said: “What is the matter that I see your scholars are departing and your ignorant ones aren’t learning? Learn! For indeed the scholar and the learner are sharers in reward.

 And there is no doubt this is from that which the hearts open up for if we remember the saying of the Mustafa (Salalaahu alayhi wa salam): Indeed Allah does not remove the knowledge, by taking it away from the hearts of the scholars, but takes it away by the death of the religious scholars till when none of the scholars remain, people will take as their leaders ignorant people, they will be consulted and will give their verdict without knowledge. So they will go astray and will lead the people astray."

And there is no doubt that this is frightening, so take from the scholars. O youth, O those who have time, those who have spare time, those who have wisdom, those who have understanding.

Direct yourselves towards the scholars and take from them. Be patient for many years. Verily the people without doubt are in need of you in your towns, cities, areas.   The people are in need of students of knowledge more than they need of food and drink.
